Claiming Universal Credit is a straightforward process if you know the steps. This guide takes you through everything you need to do, from checking if you’re eligible to what happens after you apply.

You can claim Universal Credit online at any time. The process is the same whether you’re out of work, in work, self-employed or unable to work.

1. Check if you’re eligible

To claim Universal Credit, you must be:

  • on a low income or out of work
  • 16 or over (you can claim if you’re 18 or over and in full-time education)
  • under State Pension age
  • living in the UK

There are other rules depending on your circumstances, such as your immigration status.

Check full eligibility criteria on GOV.UK

2. Create an account

To start your claim, you’ll need to create an account on the Universal Credit service.

  1. Go to GOV.UK and search for ‘Universal Credit’.
  2. Click ‘Make a new claim’.
  3. Create your account with your email address and a password.
  4. You’ll receive a code to verify your email. Keep your details safe – you’ll use this account to manage your claim.
